3D Printed Running Shoe Sole
An exploratory project utilising 3D printing and lattice structure combinations to increase running comfort and performance.
Advanced Manufacturing Technology Brief:
Utilise 3D printing technologies to improve or adapt an existing design. Or create an entirely new product which primarily utilises 3D printing. Consider the unique oppurtunities 3D printing offers in comparison to other manufacturing methods.
Project Aim

Project Methodology

1. Research
Research was conducted by reviewing existing products, interviews, product autopsy and shoe sole analysis.

3. Lattice Samples
We printed lattice samples using the Form Labs 2 (Stereolithography) and the Stratysys750 (Polyjet) 3D printers.

5. 3D Scanning
We produced our 3d scan of a shoe sole by using the Solutionix C500 scanner, which helped create our CAD models.

7. Lattice Optimisation
We chose three lattices and combined them on the shoe sole to ensure each sole part had different properties.

2. Concept Sketches
To start the process we sketched out our ideas considering aesthetics, assembly methods and lattice optimisation.

4. Lattice Testing
We tested seven samples by conducting a drop test and a step test and analysing the results to determine suitability.

6. CAD Modelling
We used Autodesk Inventor and Solidworks to create a base shape for the shoe sole before applying the lattices.

8. Final 3D Print
Our final model is an appearance model printed using the HP Multi Jet Fusion - the most feasible for our design.
For a more detailed process we made a project booklet.
